Overview

This project involved the complete modernization of a broadcast master control environment by combining two existing operational spaces into a single, fully rebuilt facility while simultaneously replacing core playout infrastructure and automation workflows.

The project extended beyond a traditional facility rebuild and included deployment of a new Imagine Communications Versio Integrated Playout environment to replace the legacy Harmonic Omneon playout server infrastructure.

A key requirement of the implementation was maintaining operational continuity with the existing Harris ADC 100 Automated Content Management and Distribution system while modernizing the underlying broadcast infrastructure.

The rebuild included full demolition and reconstruction with upgraded SDI, fiber, Ethernet, and power distribution systems, acoustic treatment, automated window shading to improve video wall visibility, operator console deployment, and complete technical system integration.

Playout Modernization and Automation Integration

The migration from the Harmonic Omneon environment to the new Imagine Versio Integrated Playout platform required extensive planning, validation, and workflow replication to ensure uninterrupted on air operations.

A major project objective was preserving one to one operational behavior between the legacy ADC 100 automation environment and the new playout infrastructure. Existing operational workflows, timing expectations, and air chain behavior were carefully maintained to minimize operational disruption during transition.

  • Automated playout server control
  • Downstream keying for bugs, crawls, and graphics insertion
  • Double box commercial execution workflows
  • SCTE 104 and SCTE 35 signaling support
  • DTMF based trigger workflows where required
  • Full WideOrbit traffic and scheduling integration

Redundancy, timing accuracy, automation reliability, and operational familiarity remained central considerations throughout the deployment process.

Infrastructure and Facility Rebuild

The physical rebuild consolidated two operational rooms into a single modernized master control environment designed for long term scalability, operator efficiency, and reliable broadcast operations.

The project involved structural modification, full demolition, rebuild coordination, and installation of upgraded broadcast and facility infrastructure. My team handled full system installation and integration based on operational requirements and the technical needs of the new playout environment.

Collaboration with Broadcast Operations

This project required close collaboration between Engineering and Broadcast Operations to ensure the rebuilt environment aligned with real world operational workflows and air chain expectations.

My team worked directly with Broadcast Operations throughout planning, testing, validation, and deployment phases to confirm system usability, workflow alignment, automation behavior, timing accuracy, operator familiarity, and transition readiness.

Operational Continuity Requirements

A major requirement of the rebuild was preserving operational familiarity for master control operators while modernizing the underlying infrastructure. Existing workflows, automation behavior, traffic integration, and operational timing expectations were carefully replicated to support a seamless transition.

Broadcast Operations and Air Chain Reliability

Master control modernization projects must protect the operational air chain while new systems are introduced, tested, and placed into service. The work required careful attention to automation behavior, operator handoff, secondary event timing, commercial break execution, channel branding, playout redundancy, routing paths, monitoring confidence, and escalation workflows so the new environment could support daily live broadcast operations without creating avoidable risk.

The modernization also required clear coordination between engineering, operations, traffic, vendors, and support teams to validate that the rebuilt room behaved predictably during routine playout, live programming, commercial execution, graphics insertion, and failure recovery scenarios.

Outcome and Impact

The completed deployment delivered a fully modernized master control environment that preserved established operational workflows while significantly improving infrastructure scalability, system flexibility, long term maintainability, and overall operational reliability.

The result was a highly integrated broadcast environment capable of supporting evolving playout, automation, and traffic requirements without disrupting day to day on air continuity.
